About Grenada

Just how you imagined a Caribbean island to be, dramatic landscapes, rainforests and waterfalls meet secluded beaches, shallow reefs and shipwrecks. Dubbed the 'Isle of Spice’' and scented by aromatic nutmeg and cinnamon, you'll find an island bursting in flavour, colour and historical charm, and a pace of life which is decidedly chilled.

Our Travellers Guide

Beaches
It may be tiny in size but Grenada delivers acres of sandy beaches, from the sweeping sands of the island's most famous beach, Grand Anse, to the secluded shores of Tamarind Bay.

Sports
Snorkelling and diving are part and parcel of any Caribbean beach, unique to Grenada though are the spontaneous cricket matches, often seen beside the water edge. The magnificent landscape lends itself perfectly to hikers, especially Grand Etang’s rainforest.

Local tastes
Known as the Isle of Spice, Grenada's cuisine is full of flavour and makes a tasty alternative to international fare. Local favourites include barbecued corncobs and rotis, dished up by the street vendors.

Evening flavour
On an island where life is so laid-back, its hardly surprising evenings here are just as unhurried. Entertainment is mostly hotel-based, with occasional theme nights and steel bands to throw some local rhythm into the mix.

Best buys
Grand Anse's daily market offers up all sorts of wonders, from nutmeg syrups and jams to handmade jewellery and leather goods. In St George, boutiques and duty-free shops line the streets.

Live the Experience
If there's one way to see the city of St George, it has to be on the ‘doof doof bus’, which pump out ragga beats all day long. For something more subdued, snorkelling with a guide over coral reefs of the west coast is extraordinary.

When to go: The island has a year-round tropical climate. June through to November is the rainy season, which can lead to tropical storms.
GMT: - 4 hrs
Language: The official language is English, French patois is also spoken.
Currency: Eastern Caribbean (EC) dollar.
Dates for the diary: Independence Day, 7th February, and the island’s main carnival, usually held on the second weekend of August.
