About Namibia

Sweeping sand dunes set ablaze with fiery sunsets and endless savannah plains, Namibia is beyond the imagination. Its varied landscapes are home to rugged mountains, tranquil waterways and the world's oldest desert. In one of the planet’s least densely populated countries, the Big Five have miles of open space to roam.

Our Travellers Guide

Beaches

The historical town of Swakopmund, surrounded by desert and sea, is Namibia's main holiday resort. From the nearby coastal town of Walvis Bay, marine cruises offer sightings of dolphins, seals and turtles.

Sports

Bird watching is one of the country's biggest attractions, with a wealth of species to spot. The National West Coast Recreation Area has dunes perfect for sandboarding and sand-skiing and mountaineering is popular in the Central Plateau.

Local tastes

Namibia's German settlers influenced a love for all things culinary. The classic safari meal is Braai, meaning barbecue, accompanied with a locally brewed beer; tombo.

Best buys

The Windhoek Street Market is great for browsing. Take home hand carved woodwork, jewellery, rugs and locally produced leather. Good buys include diamonds and semi-precious stones, including tanzanite, and liqueur chocolates.

Live the Experience

Aside from game reserves and desert exploring, Namibia has many hidden secrets. Explore the historic buildings of the capital city, Windhoek. See the Bavarian spires and Germanic architecture at Swakopmund. Discover dinosaur tracks, varied plant life, black and white rhino, buffalo, giraffes, roan and sable at Waterberg Plateau Park.

National Reserves & Game Parks

Etosha National Park

Meaning 'great white place', this is one of Africa's greatest game reserves. Its 'Pan', a flat saline desert, teems with flamingos and pelicans in the summer. It is also home to black-faced impala, eland, giraffe, elephant, blue wildebeest, springbok and black and white rhino.

Namib Desert

Acclaimed the world's oldest desert, this is a photographer's dream combining endless gravel plains and lunar-like landscapes with the spectacular, sculpted dunes of Sossusvlei.

Damaraland

Massive plains, grassland and a mountain backdrop make up this striking landscape in north-west Namibia.

Fish River Canyon

The second largest canyon in the world, this geological marvel is surrounded by vast plains and is awe-inspiring in depth.
