About St Lucia

Ticking all the right boxes, St Lucia's jungle-clad peaks, the Pitons, rise dramitically from the sea. This picture book Caribbean island has honey coloured beaches and coral reefs, sulphur springs and magnificent waterfalls. Scattered with banana plantations and the occasional clapboard rum shop, listen out for the French-based patois dialect and spot the rare St Lucia parrot in the rainforest.

Our Travellers Guide

Beaches
The best beaches are in the northwest of the island, namely Reduit Beach and the palm-lined coves and bays along the southwest coast, many only accessible by boat.
Sports
One of the island's newest activities is mountain biking through the rainforest or there are plenty of routes for hiking and horseriding. The turquoise Caribbean waters go hand in hand with superb diving and snorkelling.
Local tastes
You’ll see West Indian and Cr'ole dishes on the menu including Callaloo soup, made from a leafy green, which tastes similar to spinach and pepperpot stew, a tasty mix of pork, beef, grated cinnamon and brown sugar. Oh, and the fresh seafood is excellent.
Evening flavour
In Rodney Bay, there's an excellent West Indian vibe with a few live music bars, clubs and waterfront restaurants. Nearby, Reduit Beach has calypso nights and beach bars competing for the longest happy hour.
Best buys
T-shirts, dolls, woodcarvings, local fabrics and souvenirs are good for bargaining over in Castries Market; you'll see the St Lucian parrot on almost everything. There are great duty-free buys including jewellery and clothing at Pointe Seraphine, the main cruise-ship dock.
