Turks and Caicos
About Turks & Caicos
These forty unspoilt islands are the true meaning of deserted. With just eight of them inhabited, you’ll be hard pressed to find many commercial signs. Fringed with exquisite beaches and surrounded by one of the world’s largest coral reefs, it is a premier diving destination. Sleepy villages, superb fishing and laid-back locals create the perfect island flavour.
Our Travellers Guide
Beaches
Life is most definitely a beach here with 230 miles of tropical shores. Provo’s 5-mile long Grace Bay is the highlight of the Caicos’ and the astoundingly turquoise waters along the bays of Chalk Sound National Park.
Sports
Divers are in for a veritable feast with whales, sharks and manta rays among the many species to catch a glimpse of. Parasailing, snorkelling and fishing are highly popular as are golf, tennis and boat trips to neighbouring cays.
Local tastes
Conch is the order of the day in fritters, chowder, and Creole style or curried. Lobster, crab and fresh fish are delicious served blackened with Cajun seasoning. Side dishes include grits, cooked with peas or dried conch, and the Caribbean’s favourite rice n’ peas.
Evening flavour
At night, Provo is the place to go for music and sports bars and in some of the hotels; you’ll find nightclubs and casinos. Sink a rum punch while watching locals dabble over a game of dominoes and listen to traditional rake ‘n’ scrape music.
Best buys
Provo’s best shopping is at Ports of Call, Market Place and Central Square. Take home handwoven rugs and basketware, Cuban cigars and duty-free jewellery. The art scene is big here too with brightly coloured prints, painted wooden animals and model ships.
